What is a Firefighter?
A firefighter responds to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous conditions to protect people, property, and the environment. They train constantly across a wide range of skills so they're ready for whatever call comes in, from a structure fire to a medical emergency to helping someone locked out of their car.
About the Course
Meet Casen Cluney, a firefighter with the Honolulu Fire Department stationed at Waipahu's Station 12. Raised between Kāneʻohe and Kailua by a police officer father and a police dispatcher mother, Casen found his calling in a memory he never let go of: firefighters coming to his house again and again to lift his dad during his battle with cancer. As a firefighter, his shifts start by checking every piece of equipment on the truck, then move through drills, ladder throws, building inspections, structure fires, brush fires, medical calls, and rescues, with a game of volleyball squeezed in when the crew can. This profession is built on teamwork, grit, and a work ethic that can't be taught, making it one of the most demanding and most honored careers in Hawaiʻi.
