What is a Dental Hygienist?
A dental hygienist is a licensed oral health professional who cleans teeth, takes X-rays, and educates patients on how to maintain healthy gums and teeth. They often serve as a patient's primary point of contact in a dental office. This role should not be confused with a dentist—hygienists focus on preventive care and routine cleanings, while dentists diagnose oral diseases and perform surgical or restorative treatments.
About the Course
Meet Karina Gurat, a dental hygienist from Maui whose path into the profession started with a single conversation in her own hygienist's chair. From private practice to pediatric offices to community health outreach across Hawaiʻi, Karina brings both clinical skill and genuine care to every patient she sees. As a dental hygienist, her work goes far beyond cleanings. She takes x-rays, teaches patients how to care for their teeth, collaborates with the full dental team, and shows up for communities that don't always have easy access to care. This profession is a blend of technical precision, patient education, and community service, making it a deeply rewarding career in healthcare.
